The beginning of a new life

Timo Anttila

Hi, I'm Timo Anttila, a 37-year-old man from Tampere, Finland. I create websites and web stores for a living and make videos to YouTube as a hobby. I own two private companies and always work from home. I don't meet customers face to face and all communications are managed by phone or emails. The partners do all the selling and I just create what they sell, coding beautiful and fast websites.

This is a beginning of a story how I'll change my entire life, leaving most of my worldly possessions behind and experiencing new adventures. The story how the landlubber becomes a sea captain.

I've always wanted to see the world and be free, but I always had some obstacles. Excuses. In the past, I have visited many times in Sweden and Estonia, as well once in Russia, Norway, England and Italy. There's always long time between trips. I have lived in 19 different places during my life. Yes, I don't like to be in one place too long and I love to explore what the world can offer.

I have some problems concerning my beloved children. The children's roles are presented by a five-year-old cat Sera and one and a half years old border collie Deli. I have to pay large sums to whoever takes care of my pets every time when I go somewhere where I can't take them with me. I do love them and I don't want to give them away. So, they'll have to go wherever I'll go in the future.

A change of life

On July 27, 2018, I decided to change my life. I was tired of living the same way from day to day and doing the same things over and over again. Craving for freedom and change. So, I decided to buy a boat and go sailing in 2019.

Funny thing, I don't know anything about sailing or navigation without my beloved Google Maps. I can even get lost while walking with the dog near my home. However, somehow I always find my way back, even without the phone. Does this sound safe? Sea proof?

Winter is coming

No need to worry, I have the whole winter to learn how to navigate. I'll participate in Navigation 1 (Inland Waterways and Baltic Sea) and Navigation 2 (Tidal and Mediterranean) courses. If I get through them, I can navigate well enough to survive at sea. I also want to get an International Certificate of Competence even when it's not normally needed for small boats.

However, the courses do not teach practical skills for sailing, so I must find a skilled skipper for the first days either from the sailing clubs or through YouTube. The aim is to practice the whole summer on the coasts of Finland and Sweden, maybe in Estonia for the rum, in the autumn I'll head towards Spain.

Owning a boat is very expensive?

Yes, that can be true. The annual tab for upkeep, including insurance, winter storage, and maintenance can cost thousands per year. It can be a very expensive hobby if you don't live on boat 24/7 like I am going to do. I think it will be cheaper to pay for loans and incidental expenses than paying rent, electricity and totally overpriced water tax. I'm currently paying 7 200 euros for rent alone.

The initial investment is my biggest sorrow at this time. Boats can be really expensive if you want a spacious cabin and all the necessary accessories. I looked for suitable boats and the price range was from 40 to 90 000 euros. I can get about 20 000 euros in loan without collateral, so I will probably have to settle for a bit older and smaller model. However, departure will be next year, regardless of boat size.

Navigation 1 and 2 cost about a total of 200 euros. A cheap price to pay if I can survive the first week without wrecking my boat.

Jobs and YouTube

I work from home and I don't actively sell my services to customers' premises, so I can continue in the same job, regardless of location. Computers come along, of course. Currently working with three companies, two occasionally and one for full time.

I'll start a new YouTube channel in English for seagoing adventures and exploring cities. I've never made video logs (Vlogs), only gaming videos, cooking and unboxing, so this is a new area for me. I don't know how well I speak English in front of the camera or can I capture the right atmosphere for my audience. Time shows how the channel or this blog goes. You can go ahead and subscribe to my new channel here.

I probably continue to make gaming videos for my Finnish channel on YouTube (tewdin). I love gaming and hopefully I will never be too old to play.

Radical changes in the future. Excited, scared and I'd like to start already. I can't wait to see my boat and patience is not my virtue. Have to wait a few more months.. Too many months.

Thanks for reading.
